Cultural Perspectives in Education Essay
The word ââ¬ËCultureââ¬â¢ refers to civilization or human activity. It can also refer to universal human capability to categorize skills, and to train and convey them characteristically. Therefore, one can say that Culture evolves over a period of time in response to adaptive challenges. What activities are carried out, who should participate, why they are valued and the rules of interaction are coded into the cultural models. There are different ways to educate, express or reveal knowledge to a student. The studentââ¬â¢s education very much depends upon the teacherââ¬â¢s philosophy of education. This philosophical point of view appears to be true that could bring a negative influence in the classroom, no matter what syllabus is designed for the student. The students possess different qualities and beliefs that teachers should realize and learn to adapt to in the classroom. If teachers are not able to go beyond the boundaries of social class, religion, race, creed, gender, sex, disability or cultural background, then the focus of the students will also turn heavily upon differences and the classification of students as special needs or underachiever, thus building insensitive pre-expectations toward students in the classroom. ââ¬Å"The primary goal of education is to show students different points of view and encourage them to evaluate their own beliefs. The teacher should help the students to appreciate how oneââ¬â¢s observations and interpretations are influenced by social identity and backgroundâ⬠. Chang, H. (1993). Students should be allowed to feel free to voice an opinion and empowered to defend it. A student is able to focus on and enjoy learning more when the school and classroom make him feel safe-comfortable with himself and with his surrounding. The learning situation should be made culturally neutral by keeping in mind the potential barriers and obstacles that each student may have. Taking this into account Marda Steffey (2001) suggests a four point motivational framework for culturally open teaching: 1. Establishing inclusionââ¬ânorms, procedures, and structures woven together to form a learning context in which all learners and teachers feel respected by and connected to one another. 2. Developing attitudeââ¬âââ¬Å"norms, procedures and structures that create through relevance and choice a favorable disposition among learners and teachers toward the learning experience or learning goal. 3. Enhancing meaningââ¬ânorms, procedures, and structures that expand, refine, or increase the complexity of what is learned in a way that matters to learners, includes their values and purposes, and contributes to a critical consciousness. 4. Engendering competenceââ¬ânorms, procedures, and structures that create an understanding for learners of how they are or can be effective in learning something of personal valueâ⬠. (Nawang, 1999) The main idea of the four points is that when student and teachers find themselves submerged in a unique world of the classroom, the interaction of culture is invaluable for the success of the learning process. Solomon, B. B. (1991). Teacher should recognize any biases or stereotypes in the class room, ââ¬Å"by treating each student as an individual, and respect each student for whom he or she is. Amend any language practices or examples that exclude or degrade any group, should be aware of how students feel about the cultural climate in the classroomâ⬠. (Woolbright, 1989) A productive education must start with an awareness of these issues and some basic schemes for overcoming them. Although a variety of teachings can be fruitful, it seems especially cooperative to offer an atmosphere where students can easily hold an open discussion rather than class session in which a correct answer is required. True open discussion will send a message of authority between equal students who have something substantial to add to a common endeavor. Sharing the facts and principles of oneââ¬â¢s discipline with students is very important as that helps to prepare an environment of comfort, trust and joint respect. Therefore, such an environment makes it possible for people to exchange ideas and thoughts on complex and often terrifying issues. It opens a way for students to carry out a common ground of joint practices and respect which can bind students together and at the same time make it easier for them to understand and observe many differences. The teacher should not only establish a content of diversity but a procedure that creates and demonstrate appreciation of diversity. It is important to keep in mind that students always observe and learn their teachersââ¬â¢ behavior as well as their expressions. The classroom environment not only represent the fundamental value of appreciation of diversity of cultures nevertheless it also capitulate great rewards in terms of vital thinking skills, especially the aptitude to value sophisticated multiple point of views on complex rational and ethical issues. The school or college should recognize all of the various types of diversities, whether it is cultural or not. Students should understand when they go their classroom that they will be interacting with many different types of students from all walks all of life. Levinson, B. A. , and Holland, D. (1996). They should understand that they are all in this facility for a reason and that it doesnââ¬â¢t matter what they look like or what language they speak, they need to cooperate to make their class environment more conducive to learning. It is very unfortunate to say that not much improvement in this has been made around the world except few countries, while in rest there is still school and colleges where cultural factors are given preferences. Every discipline is influenced by the inequity of power that exists across racial and cultural groups, between genders, and among other socially created classes of difference. In spite of advances in race and cultural relations, gender equality, and religious tolerance, significant documented differences continues to exist around the world. In order to gain a true moderate education, school administration should honor diversity of cultures. It should recognize holidays of other ethnicities and always study new and interesting ways of life. The students of the respective schools and colleges should ââ¬Å"love learning about other cultures and how they interact with one anotherâ⬠. (Harold, 2006) The students should be allowed to do arts and projects that are representatives of other cultures and take great pride in the fact that they now have knowledge of their brothers and sisters around the world. Educators have a responsibility to assist the people who are privileged enough to be students in becoming aware of the inequalities around them. Therefore, each educator should work to infuse each class with the diverse voices that contributed to the knowledge base of the discipline. References Chang, H. The Death Penalty Is A Valued Part Of Our Judicial System
ââ¬Å"Why I believe the death penalty is a valued part of our judicial systemâ⬠Although the death penalty is opposed by many people, I believe capital punishment is a necessary and valued part of the judicial system for numerous reasons such as the ultimate warning message, the costs involved, and the morality of the punishment. The first reason that the death penalty is a valued part of our justice system is the notion that it serves as the ultimate warning message towards people considering crimes such as murder, or any other crime for that matter. Knowing the United States court system will not hesitate to put convicted murderers to death this would incline these would be murderers to think twice about their actions. Ernest Van Den Haag, PhD, Late Professor of Jurisprudence at Fordham University, stated, Common sense, lately bolstered by statistics, tells us that the death penalty will deter murder... People fear nothing more than death. Therefore, nothing will deter a c riminal more than the fear of death... life in prison is less feared. Murderers clearly prefer it to execution -- otherwise, they would not try to be sentenced to life in prison instead of death... Therefore, a life sentence must be less deterrent than a death sentence. And we must execute murderers as long as it is merely possible that their execution protects citizens from future murder. Enterprise Architecture Benefits And Risks Essay
Defense Enterprise Architecture: Benefits and Risks Hichem Ben Abdallah Naval Postgraduate School Glenn Cook September, 16 2016 Enterprise Architecture: Benefits and Risks According to Bologa, Faur, and Ghisoiu (2010), Enterprise Architecture (EA) is a methodology that incorporate the processes of the domain to be automated; the software applications to be designed; the data and information to be gathered; and the technologic models to be conceived. In addition, Giachetti, R.E. (2010) suggested that the term enterprise is a whole complex, socio-technical system that includes not only information, processes, and technologies, but also people. According to the office of the Chief Information Officer (2012), the EA within the Department of Defense (DoD) tends to achieve desired capabilities to enable effective war fighting, business, and defense intelligence operations based on the DoD directives, policy, and investment decisions. In fact, combatant commanders benefit from EA during the war fighting in the organization and management of their war fighting assets (Cook, 2014). For instance, EA enhances war fighting effectiveness by providing instant situation awareness and minimizing costs in terms of ammunition and logistics assets. Additionally, EA allows a ââ¬Å"rapid access to information for strategic decisionsâ⬠(Cook, 2014). Linguistic and Philosophical Investigations
Question: Discuss about the Linguistic and Philosophical Investigations. Answer: Introduction: This section includes self-reflection on the results obtained by undertaking an online test to assess emotional intelligence. I have an entertainer type of personality, which helps me in making quick rapport with the colleagues. It also helps me in getting my work done easily from people. My extraverted nature helps me perceiving good sense of others and in better understanding them. My score of 59% in the observing power reflects my ability to pay attention to specific features. This skill helps in business environment where I can effectively assess the capability of the employees, deal with facts, abstract theories, and can oppose brainstorming that will earn maximum profit to an organization. I have feeling personality and this attribute makes me capable of being a good leader. It helps in better managing relationships through compassion, emotional and sensitive to others needs. This personality test reflects a prospective and assertive personality trait of mine. I am capable of d ealing with expected and unexpected challenges. In a business environment, it will help me to gain employees trust and commitment. However, being assertive helps in handling tough situation, which is an added advantage when working in business setting. Being a flexible explorer I hold more pragmatic view of life that helps me in grabbing good opportunities I can better understand the needs of an employee and motivate them to maximize productivity ussing effective communication skills. My strategy of people mastery will help me taking a lead in social setting by managing others emotions and gain their feedback. Conclusively, my traits are best suited for workings in a business setting where my emotional intelligence helps in attaining business objectives. I think that the best way to respond to the Store Managers behavior is by explaining her how the yelling effects the teams motivation. It is better to be prepared with answers for poor performance and convey the problems in a polite manner (Wallace et al., 2013). Talking in a soft voice will calm her down and help initiate a real communication. The store manger failed to demonstrate the key principles of emotional intelligence. She was insensitive, arrogant, and reluctant to feedback from the staff. She showed lack of self and social awareness as she was unable to perceive her own emotions and that of the employees. She failed to direct a positive behavior. It was evident that she lacked relationship management skills. As a leader, I will perform an assessment of employee performance. According to the results I will create a strategic get-well plan for those lagging behind. I will create a work culture that includes positive workgroup relationships. This will in turn increase loyalty and engagement in work place. I will be fair and open in implementing and managing any change. As a leader, I will uptake all the responsibility and engage with commitment. Demonstrating respect, effective communication skills, building rapport is the most important leadership behavior that will help gain employee engagement. I would work hard to be a positive role model having a clear vision. The store managers behavior in the case study can negatively impact the organization. Department managers may feel disrespected and lose trust. It may decrease the staff morale. Staff may feel demotivated eventually leading to low self esteem and enthusiasm. It may lead increased absenteeism and further decrease in productivity. Eventually, it may shut the business. The store manger should have effectively communicated her expectations from the team and deal the issues hindering the productivity. Criticism is necessary but should be balanced with reward system. Instead of treating them as slaves it is required to develop innovative approaches to increase the revenue. The goal of the store manger should be to help the departmental staff to achieve their goals by catering their needs and addressing any issues (L̉̉z̉̉roiu, 2015). The two examples of misinterpretation of expressions or behavior arising due to diverse workforce are: Maintaing constant eye contact is considered disrespectful in Aboriginal culture Saying yes can also mean I will consider which may be misinterpreted as clients consent for a specific event. However, the reason for saying yes in the situation may be to avoid being rude (Druskat et al., 2013) I would explain the employee the facts related to verbal and nonverbal communication rules that differ in different cultures. I would explain that if the rules which are specific for each culture are taken for granted will lead to misinterpretation. In order to avoid such miscommunication team can develop cross cultural communication skills. It is essential for people working in a diverse workforce to learn new meaning and ways of behaving with people belonging to different cultures. To overcome communication barrier in such workplace one should appreciate communication rules in ones own culture. To overcome such barrier one should stop judging an employee of different culture by their own cultural values. It is necessary to understand and respect the decision-making approaches and conflict resolving skills of different cultures and collaborate accordingly (Sirota Klein, 2013). I would perform a Myers-Briggs test to determine the employees personality type and communication style preferred by him to understand him better. I would initiate the discussion with the employee based on the degree of his introversion, extraversion, and capability of sensing, judging, perceiving and logical thinking. I would frame the questions in a way that better defines the problem of both of us. I would ensure not to use authorative tone and be more sensitive to his issues else, he might feel disrespected and unwanted. I would prefer open-ended questions such as tell me how you feel about? I would take a keen interest on understanding the employees viewpoint about a situation keeping aside my own perception. It will help better manage relationship with him and in resolving his issues. It will make employee that his feelings are considered and that he is wanted (Wallace et al., 2013). The key to satisfy both personal and employees needs is motivation. According to Maslows Hierarchy of needs, the five main needs of people includes- physiological needs (eat, drink), safety needs (security and shelter), belonging needs (to be accepted and feel important), self-esteem needs (need to feel good about oneself and be recognized for their potential) and self-realization needs (need for development and personal fulfillment) (Goleman et al., 2013). I would work hard to fulfill these needs in my life. This self-awareness will help fulfill these needs of an employee. I will motivate the employee by assigning more group tasks and increase work safety. Assign interesting tasks to minimize boredom and arrange workshops for improving involvement. It will increase the motivation to meet performance standards by increasing incentive, rewards system, celebrating team success. Involving them will make them feel that their respect and dignity is maintained There is a positive correlation between high emotional intelligence and achievement of business objectives. People with high EQ have ability to get their work done by making fullest use of others talent. Considering emotional impact of decision-making is essential in business. A particular decision may fetch positive outcomes only when it favors the employees and maintains their emotional well-being. Decision making process evokes different emotions such as empathy, love, guilt, shame, anger, resentment, happiness and other emotions. Only when a particular decision evokes a positive response among the employees does it leads to better decision-making and achieving the business objectives. The decision making process such as increase of work target for specific employees may have both negative responses. Employees who are excluded from this specific group may feel unwanted and disappointed. Alternately, employees included in the list may undergo a phase of hope and fear. The hope of i ncentive may evoke motivation. However, the fear of being unrewarded or denied incentives after achieving high targets or working extra hours may decrease the motivation. Decisions are usually made that evoke positive response from the employees (L̉̉z̉̉roiu, 2015). The policies that are to be adhered in the workplace include policies, which enforces respectful treatment of employees and reward system Safe, flexible and healthy workplace policies (OHS policy) Policies to address mental illness issues and performance management Policies of fair adjustments and feedback OHS legislation help mangers take decisions that are in favors organization as well as employees needs and safety. Thus, decisions are made that helps staff retention, and maximization of productivity. This legislation minimizes damage and cost by maintaining health and safety of employees (Goleman et al., 2013). Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) Lawyers
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) Lawyers Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Social Security Disability Oftentimes,à Social Securityà and even some adjudicators fail to understand the severity of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), making it even more difficult for individuals who suffer from the disorder to obtain benefits they desperately need and deserve. Even some health care providers are skeptical about the diagnosis with the notion that CFS is a psychogenic illness or even a ââ¬Å"figment of the patientââ¬â¢s imagination.â⬠(1) à CFS can be difficult to diagnose and treat as there is no specific test or cure for the condition, resulting in wrong diagnoses and even treatment. However, CFS has been known to cause a severe impairment and disability, precluding individuals from caring for themselves and working even the simplest job. According to the Mayo Clinic, there are 8 official signs and symptoms of CFS: fatigue; loss of memory or concentration; unexplained muscle pain; pain that moves from one joint to another without swelling or redness; headache of a new type, pat tern or severity; sore throat; enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or armpit; un-refreshing sleep; and extreme exhaustion lasting more than 24 hours after physical or mental exercise (2).Scientists still donââ¬â¢t know the exact causes of CFS, but some factors affecting the disorder include congenital predisposition, viral infections, immune system problems, and hormonal imbalances. Moreover, other medical conditions like depression, increased work absences, social isolation and lifestyle restrictions that sometimes accompany the disorder can, in turn, exacerbate these symptoms. Treatment for CFS tends to focus on providing relief for the specific symptoms on a case-by-case basis. For example, antidepressants may be prescribed if the patient is experiencing depression as one of their symptoms, and/or a medication to assist with sleep if that is an issue. However, therapy that combines psychological counseling with a gentle exercise program has been found to be the most effective in providing overall symptomology relief (3).A new report from an expert committee of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) reveals how severe and disabling CFS can be (4). IOM points out that CFS ââ¬Å"is a serious, chronic, complex, multi-system disease that often can profoundly limit the health and activities of affected patients.â⬠In their report, IOM proposes new diagnostic criteria and a new name for CFS: Systemic Exertional Intolerance Disease (5). They believe that this new name will help resolve the unnecessary stigmatization and trivialization that oftentimes accompany the CFS diagnosis. If you have CFS, or experience these symptoms, call us today to talk with one of our experienced attorneys about whether you may qualify for disability benefits. Alternative avenues for pain relief may also include acupuncture, massage, yoga, or tai chi.ââ¬ËBeyond Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Redefining an Illness.ââ¬â¢The full report with supplemental materials is available at:à iom.edu/Reports/2015/ME-CFS.aspx.The new diagnostic criteria proposed would require the patient to have the following symptoms: 1. a substantial reduction or impairment in the ability to engage in pre-illness levels of occupational, educational, social, or personal activities, that persists for more than 6 months and is accompanied by fatig ue, which is often profound, is of new or definite onset (not lifelong), is not the result of ongoing excessive exertion, and is not substantially alleviated by rest; 2. post-exertional malaise; and 3. un-refreshing sleep. Further, a cognitive impairment and/or orthostatic intolerance would also be required by the new proposed criteria. The severity and frequency of these symptoms should also be considered according to the IOM.
